These coins feature the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India. The sculpture of four lions standing back to back originally stood atop the Ashoka pillar (Aśoka Column) at Sarnath. The Ashoka pillars are a series of columns erected at Buddhist sites throughout the Indian subcontinent during the reign of Emperor Ashoka (c. 268-232 BCE). The pillars were inscribed with the emperor’s edicts regarding morality shaped by Buddhist tenets.
