Green Postage Composition Earrings
These earrings are made with two pairs of postage stamps. The top two are from Mexico (one peso, 1956). They’re part of a series that celebrated the centennial of the first Mexican postage stamps. They feature an Aztec glyph for deer (màzatl in Nahuatl). In the Aztec calendar, the deer is associated with the hunt, the West, and Tlaloc, god of rain and thunderstorms. As a symbol of beauty, grace, and agility, Màzatl is also a personal name. The image itself is a reproduction of an Aztec clay stamp found in pre-Columbian Veracruz.
.
The lower stamps are Algerian, from 1947. They show the coat of arms for the city of Oran.
.
Trimmed in Czech crystal. About 2.5” long and feather-light.
